POLARIMETERS :: APPLICATIONS :: Astronomical Polarization

One of the first uses of the photoelastic modulator (PEM) was as a Stokes Polarimeter for astronomical polarimetry. Dr. James Kemp, late Professor of Physics at the University of Oregon, used PEMs to study the polarization of light from nearby stars and features on the sun, such as sunspots.

The PEM based polarimeter is well suited for astronomical applications because of the PEMs large acceptance angle and world class sensitivity in polarization detection.  The Dual PEM Polarimeter also includes data logging features which will allow for long term monitoring of star light.
