Astronomical Source Measurement
Polarization measurement for astronomical sources are among the first applications developed using PEMs. The inventor and early champion of the PEM, Professor Jim Kemp, used the device to characterize polarization states of the sun. These optical systems have been adapted by Hinds on occasion to survive extreme environments.
In one design project, Hinds was involved in custom development of a polarimeter to measure circular polarization. The measurement of very small circular polarization signals was meant to detect the presence of biological molecules that generate circular polarization states in their interaction with light.
